Licensed Vocational Nurse (Temple)
Position Summary
Performs duties under direction of physician and/or site nurse to assist in examination and treatment of patients. Under general supervision, makes interpretations and exercises some discretion in routine situations.
Experience and Education
Required
- Graduate of an accredited vocational nursing school.
Preferred
- Previous nursing experience in a Clinic/Outpatient environment
- Proficiency in Spanish
Licenses and Certification
- Valid Texas LVN license; BLS (CPR & AED) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
Responsibilities
- Obtains, evaluates, and records patient history in medical file.
- Obtains and measures vital signs and records information on patients’ charts. Use thermometer, scales, sphygmomanometer/stethoscope, scalp vein needles, hearing/vision screening equipment, pulse oximetry, typanometer, basic laboratory, i.e., microscope, centrifuge, hematology analyzer, and specimen collection.
- Prepares and maintains examination/treatment rooms, including cleaning and sterilizing instruments, and inventory of medical supplies and materials.
- Assists in the examination of patients under the direction of a physician.
- Explains treatment procedures to patients.
- May be required to draw and collect blood samples from patients and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis.
- Prepares and administers oral medications and routine immunizations.
- Performs routine diagnostic and laboratory tests.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to recognize and respect cultural diversity of patients.
- Serve as the communication liaison between patient and physician. Capable of documenting patient communication and clinical treatment accurately and appropriately.
- Recognize and respond effectively to verbal, nonverbal, and written communication.
- Ability to follow established policies and procedures dealing with health care.
- Comply with established risk management and safety procedures.
- Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and health care team.
- Must respect the confidential nature of medical information.
- Working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, and procedures.
- Able to work efficiently and cope with emergency situations.
- Capable of using experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
- Good computer skills and a working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Able to read and interpret documents such as charts, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Professional manner and appearance.
- Emotional and physical health sufficient to meet the demands of the position.
- Ability to stand for long periods of time.
- Strength sufficient to: lift some patients, move heavy equipment on wheels (up to approximately 500 lbs), and to move patients in wheelchairs and stretchers.
